Sinus Lift

A sinus lift, also known as a sinus augmentation, is a surgical procedure performed by a dentist or oral surgeon to increase the amount of bone in the upper jaw's posterior region, specifically in the area of the molars and premolars. The goal of a sinus lift is to create a more substantial and stable foundation of bone for dental implant placement in cases where there is insufficient bone height due to the presence of the maxillary sinus, a hollow air space located above the upper jaw.

Here's how a sinus lift works:

  • Assessment: Before the procedure, the dentist or oral surgeon will conduct a thorough examination, which may include X-rays or 3D imaging, to evaluate the amount and quality of existing bone in the upper jaw and the position of the maxillary sinus. They will determine if a sinus lift is necessary and which type of sinus lift procedure is most suitable.
  • Procedure: The sinus lift procedure involves lifting the sinus membrane upward to create space for the bone graft. Different techniques may be used depending on the individual's anatomy and the specific situation. The most common technique involves making an incision in the gum tissue to expose the bone and then carefully pushing the sinus membrane upward. A bone graft material, often a synthetic material or processed bone from a donor source, is then placed in the space between the sinus membrane and the jawbone.
  • Healing and Integration: Over time, the bone graft material becomes integrated with the patient's natural bone, promoting the growth of new bone cells. This process is known as osseointegration. It usually takes several months for the graft material to fully integrate and stabilize.

A sinus lift is typically performed when there is inadequate bone height in the upper jaw due to factors such as tooth loss, bone resorption, or the natural shape and position of the sinus. It is often done in preparation for dental implant placement, as implants require a certain amount of bone for stability and successful integration. The sinus lift procedure not only provides a solid base for dental implants but also helps prevent the implant from protruding into the sinus cavity, which could lead to complications.

After a sinus lift procedure, proper healing and follow-up care are crucial to ensure the success of the bone graft and the eventual placement of dental implants. Your dentist or oral surgeon will provide you with specific post-operative instructions and monitor your healing progress.
