A hair transplant is a surgical procedure performed to treat hair loss or baldness by moving hair follicles from one part of the body (called the donor site) to another part that is experiencing hair thinning or baldness (called the recipient site). The primary goal of a hair transplant is to restore hair growth in areas where hair has become thin or has been lost.

There are several types of hair transplant procedures, with the two main techniques being:

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT):

  • Also known as the strip method, FUT involves the surgical removal of a strip of scalp tissue from the donor site, typically from the back or sides of the head where hair is dense

  • The strip is then dissected into individual follicular units under a microscope.

  • These follicular units, containing one to four hair follicles, are transplanted into small incisions made in the recipient site.

  • FUT leaves a linear scar at the donor site, which can be covered by surrounding hair.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE):

  • FUE is a minimally invasive technique where individual hair follicles are extracted directly from the donor site, one by one, using specialized instruments.

  • The extracted follicles are then transplanted into the recipient site.

  • FUE does not leave a linear scar, and the tiny scars left at the extraction sites are usually not noticeable.

  • FUE can be done manually or with the assistance of automated systems.

Both FUT and FUE can achieve natural-looking results, and the choice between them often depends on factors such as the patient's hair type, the extent of hair loss, and individual preferences. Other less common hair transplant techniques include Direct Hair Implantation (DHI), Robotic Hair Transplantation, and more.

The transplanted hair typically falls out within a few weeks of the procedure, but new hair growth starts within a few months. It takes several months for the newly transplanted hair to fully grow and achieve the desired density. Hair transplants are considered a long-lasting solution to hair loss, and the results can be permanent if the transplanted hair follicles are genetically resistant to the effects of hair loss.

It's important to note that a hair transplant is a surgical procedure, and like any surgery, it carries some risks. Individuals considering a hair transplant should consult with a qualified and experienced medical professional to determine if they are suitable candidates for the procedure and to discuss the potential benefits, risks, and expected outcomes.
